What's all the fuzz about eating a
Balut? What's so shocking about it? Please excuse me for being so confused... I really never understood how and why eating this special delicacies became such a big issue because I grew up eating these and almost all the people I know love
Balut... When I was just a kid, I remembered that almost every night, I would hear a street vendor shouting
"Baluuut... Baluuut... Baluuut......", very invitingly calling us outside to buy from them... Eating
Balut was always a treat, a very special moment for our family to enjoy a favorite midnight snack...
Well, the confusion lasted until I found out later that
Balut is actually called
Fetal Duck Egg!!! No wonder... that's why
Balut is often referred to as one of the
WEIRDEST FOOD in the world, and my family actually enjoy them! ... Hmmm... maybe we can join
Fear Factor if this is the only challenge because we'll definitely win hands down... :)
We always eat
Balut straight from the shell and we never really scrutinize one, until my kids did!!! But before that part, I have to warn you, pictures below will be graphic or gross for some... sorry...

To enjoy
Balut, make sure it's freshly cook and still hot...

We usually eat a
Balut with a pinch of salt... then eggs are savored by sipping the broth first after you cracked the top of the shell open...

Slowly peel the shell and eat the yolk and the embryo except the white part... want a peek?

Honestly, it taste just like hard boiled eggs, with a little twist...
"Baluuut... Baluut... Baluut....", anyone? :)

I'll pass.
I did see this on that show on the travel network with Andrew Zimmern. He said the same thing you said about it tasting like hard boiled eggs.
MIkky,
Thanks for educating us on Balut.
One man's weird is another man's WOW! ha! ha! The picture of the actual yolk and albumen is very nicely photographed!
Sorry...this is one thing I can't eat. Won't eat. Ever.
I have no clue what balut is, I know you just showed me a picture....thanks for the warning hee hee, but it's just not registering, but that might be a good thing! LOL!
i love balut, too. no big deal bout the sisiw part, really. it has been a while though since i last had one.
No... thank you ! ;-)
i don't eat balut e..
I have never tried, not that I wouldn't. Does it have a strong aroma. I have also heard of a duck egg (fertilized) that has been fermented...is that called something different?
I like balut too. But I just can't eat the chick. Yumm.
I'm Pinay, but I'm one of those who can't eat them. I tried, actually, but the farthest I got to was sip the broth. When I bit the egg/chick, I started gagging.. so that was my first and last attempt. I saw a Fear Factor show here in the US where one of the challenges was to eat balut.. I agree you'd win hands down! :o)
This is one of those things I'd never learned of until fairly recently. I like to think I'm pretty open-minded about food...although I'd have to think about it, lol!
I too could not eat it... I know it's supposed to taste great, but on a psychologically, I'm blocked. Maybe I'd give it a try, though!
Cheers,
Rosa
I was watching a travel show on TV just yesterday and the host tried Balut. Up until then I had never heard of it.See we learn something every day!!
I've never heard of this before, although I'll eat almost anything I have to admit I'd think twice before eating this. Interesting though, I've learnt something new!
Oh hmmm... maybe if you get me reaaaaaally drunk, I'd go for one. Otherwise, yeeeks!!! =X
Not for me...but more for you! ;)
I love Balut!
I can actually eat 3 Balut eggs in one sitting. I eat everything. I don't leave anything out. I grew up eating Balut. Maybe that's also the reason why I couldn't relate to people who are grossed out with it. Para sa akin, masarap sya. :-)
I couldn't finish a whole balut. I like the broth and the yolk but I don't eat the chick. I give that part to my hubby. :)
I think I will pass on this one!
I love balut! I don't remember when I was first introduced to it but I've been a balut lover ever since.
oh no!! I'm not into it when I see Andrew eating that lively eggy balut..lol!I know what you mean by growing up eating the foods we love.I guess the foods we eat are so different from others..my hubby don't understand why I love punget shrimp paste sambal ..he said stinky and yucky! lol!
I've never tried this.Actually no big deal its just egg a little earlier.
Hmm. I'm not sure I could.
My sister had one and she still pales when talking about it :)
