Revisiting Kanin Club for Lunch

It was a Monday, and a holiday... together with the whole family, my side of the family anyway, we decided to spend the day in Alabang... so for lunch, we opted to have it at Kanin Club, Westgate Center at Filinvest, since this resto is nowhere to be found in the Quezon City, Makati or Manila area yet...

I first knew about Kanin Club from the post I read from Market Manila a few months back... that made me want to try this resto... so on the way home from Tagaytay last April, Hubby and I, with the kids, grabbed our opportunity to try Kanin Club, since we were passing Sta. Rosa... we enjoyed the experience very much that Hubby invited his parents for dinner at their Westgate Center branch... again everybody was very happy with the meal that it became a favorite... aside from good food, the price was also reasonable... thus, the reason we suggested to my side of the family to try Kanin Club for this particular lunch...

For this branch... the ambiance of the place was quite homey... made you remember the old times...

Don't you just love this? This is use to pound (bayo) the rice grains (palay) that are harvested... interesting huh...

Let's get down to business... now from the menu, here were the choices made...

Laing (P172.00)... whenever we dine in a Filipino restaurant, ordering laing is a must... main ingredient, dried taro leaves cooked in coconut milk, some pork slices and chili... o..oh... for this visit, this laing was quite salty... as in very salty...

Tapa ni Ana (P187)... beef slices that were marinated, probably in soysauce, sugar, garlic... well, the taste was good, BUT.... look closely, the tapa was actually swimming in oil...

Loaded Fried Rice (P179.00)... a specialty because as they said, this fried rice was loaded with a lot of ingredients, chinese sausage, crab meat, ham, ground pork, green peas, carrots, and egg... this was Hubby's favorite... but for this particular day... it was a let down... the first time we had this, it was so fragrant and full of flavor, but this time, the taste seemed to be missing something...

Bagoong or Shrimp Paste Rice (P149.00)... Kid1 ordered this fried rice... it was not bad, but nothing great... oh my... is this the same resto we were raving about?...

Crispy Dinuguan (P261.00)... a house specialty... we fell in love with Kanin Club because of this dish... deep-fried and crispy tenga (pig ears) and crispy lechon kawali (pork belly) cooked in pork blood... sorry folks, but this is really the right description... anyway... again.... it's too sour this time... Hubby just kept on looking at me, his eyes were asking, "what's happening???"...

Crispy Pork Binagoongan (P231.00)... fried and supposed to be crispy pork cooked in shrimp paste sauce... meat was tough and dry... sauce, too salty...

Binukadkad na Tilapia (P246.00)... a popular Filipino fish that was beautifully fried after cutting it "butterfly" style... at last!!!... this dish reminded us why we like Kanin Club...

Kare-Kare (P358.00)... a favorite Filipino dish... beef/pork and ox tripe that is traditionally cooked with rich peanut sauce... Kid2 ordered this and he loved it... but be careful with the bagoong they serve along with it, it was too salty...

Well, I was expecting to give a good review for this resto... but, we were kind of disappointed because we were expecting good food at a reasonable price... what Hubby and I noticed was that aside from a"Bad Day" from their kitchen, their price increased to almost 20%, and the serving was kind of smaller... Anyway, we all experience "Bad Day", that's why we won't stop going to Kanin Club... BUT again, we have to give it a rest first... :)

It appears there is no consistency with their cooking. But that happens to us a lot too with takeaways here... now, what were not a fave place for us to go before has become the top of the list. It must be the change of either management or chef.

Anyhow, thanks for posting Filipino food... i don't get to eat it here unless i cook them and there's limited amount of dish i can cook and be able to cook.

Oh, i miss Filipino food. I remember last year, when i stayed in Earls Court while studying for an exam for a week, i ate at Filipino resto all week.

Those photos are wonderful! Too bad they didn't taste as good as they looked. Many of those dishes are new to me, and I'd love to try them. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Maybe they were changing chefs and serving sizes and prices....hmm I wonder if they weren't bought by someone else who managed to turn something good into something well no so good.
Still it was nice reading about all these dishes, some of them are new to me so thanks for sharing :D

Looks like a nice restaurant worth visiting. Thanks for sharing all those delicious looking meals. I love laing too. It's the perfect pampagana. My favorite dish is kare-kare. I'm fond of eating dinuguan and find that Crispy Dinuguan very interesting. I'll keep this restaurant in my list of places to go to.
